Get unstuck: hire a book coach

You’re writing a book? Exciting! How’s it going?

It’s not easy, is it? On some days you can write three or four pages (although you often throw them away the next). On others you sit staring at a blank page, that darn cursor blinking you into a state of hypnosis. Or is it winking at you?

Either way, you’ve reached the stage where you’re about to hurl your laptop at the wall. But wait. Before you do that, do yourself — and your book — a favour. Let me help.

Hire me as your book coach. I’ll be beside you — virtually — coaching you all the way through the writing process from developing your idea to a finished manuscript. So you end up with the best book you can write — saving you time and tears of frustration.

What is a book coach?

There’s no hard and fast definition of a book coach. Every book coach is different and has their own way of doing things. But their goal is the same: to help you write the best book you can. And they’ll typically do this by helping you stay motivated, keeping you focused, reviewing your manuscript and providing feedback and guidance. They’ll often brainstorm ideas with you and act as a sounding board too.

What a book coach won’t do, is write the entire book for you. You’ll need a ghostwriter for that. (I can help there, too. Check out my ghostwriting services page to find out how.)

What’s the difference between a book coach and an editor?

Editing is usually a one-off service to help you polish your manuscript. Coaching tends to be a longer-term arrangement spanning months or even years. But that’s not the only difference between the two.

While an editor will pick up any structural problems in your finished manuscript, a coach will help you prevent these in the first place. They’ll work with you from the initial ideas stage all the way through to the polished manuscript. What’s more, they’ll keep you going throughout the process.

How much does it cost to hire a book coach?

Book coaching fees vary from coach to coach. You can expect to pay anything from £50 an hour to £250 or more. Some book coaches offer 3, 6 or 12-month packages costing from £500 to £1,500 a month. The price depends on the level of service offered. The more of your coach’s time is involved, the more you’ll pay.

How does book coaching work?

A book coach works with you throughout the writing process. From idea, to outline through to first, then final, polished draft. They’ll usually provide one-to-one sessions, editorial feedback and support.

But just as every author is unique, no two book coaches are the same either. Some coach non-fiction only; some fiction only; others do both. Others only coach business books, memoirs, or self-help guides. And while some book coaches will travel to meet you in person, others may only coach virtually via video link.

What’s important is you find the right book coach for you.

Should you hire a book coach?

If you want to get that book written and you have the budget for it, yes. You should definitely hire a book coach.

Hiring a book coach is a commitment by you and your coach. You sign up for pestering — ahem, I mean motivating — so that’s just what they’ll do. What’s more, not only will you get your book finished, you’ll become a better writer too.

If you don’t have the time or the skill to write your book yourself, hire a ghostwriter. They’ll write the book for you, but you’ll get the credit. Simple. Job done.

Can I pay someone to write my book for me?

Yes, you can. If you don’t have the time or skill to write your book yourself, you can hire someone to write it for you. For a fee, a ghostwriter will write your book for you, but you’ll get the credit.
